More Energy-saving Tips from Efficiency Vermont

Every Vermonter can save energy and lower their utility bills
    Save our environment
  • Switch halogen lamps with energy efficient bulbs and consume less power (this also reduces the risk of fire that halogens can cause), turn lights off when they are not needed, and keep bulbs and light fixtures clean because the dirt can absorb light.

  • Look for energy efficient appliances for the kitchen; check door seals on the refrigerator; set the refrigerator temperature between at 36° and 38°, and the freezer between 0° and 5°; clean condenser coils on the refrigerator; only run full loads in the dishwasher; use the microwave whenever possible; and use the smallest pan for every cooking job.

  • For home heating, have your furnace serviced to ensure maximum performance; clean baseboards and keep furniture from blocking the heat; close dampers when not using the fireplace; lower your thermostat; and seal up drafts.

  • Water heaters consume a lot of energy. Switching to an oil, propane or natural gas powered water heater to save energy and money; and set your water temperature on the lowest possible temperature (120° is usually acceptable).

  • And most importantly - get out the long underwear and lower that thermostat!
